Photography › Locations

There aren't any mountains, deserts or jungles but nowhere matches the abundance of wildlife locations in Florida. The vast Everglades and Big Cypress National Parks are premier local areas but there are also smaller nature parks, rookeries, wildlife refuges, etc. that I visit.

Cape Romano Dome Home

The Cape Romano Dome Homes were built in 1981 and were intended to be a vacation home that was a self-sufficient, eco-friendly relaxation spot for Bob Lee's family. Built to sustain hurricane winds with little damage the home was brought to an end by simple erosion. The ground on which the domes were built began to erode until the home was surrounded by water.

Swamp Buggy Races

Naples, Florida is famous for its multi-million dollar mansions, high-end shopping, world-class culture, sophisticated dining, art galleries, chic clothing boutiques, and home decor shops. Lesser known is the Naples Swamp Buggy races which are a delightful contrast to that image of social refinement.

While the pro-class racers shown in the first photo are great to watch, the Jeep class is a lot of fun as they run in the deep water.

Dry Tortugas

The Dry Tortugas are a small group of islands, located in the Gulf of Mexico at the end of the Florida Keys, about 67 miles west of Key West.

“Tortugas” means turtles in Spanish, the name “Dry” was given to the island to indicate to other mariners that the land mass lacked fresh water,.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

National Audubon began protecting the wading birds nesting within Corkscrew Swamp in 1905. During the 1940s and '50s, cypress forests in Florida were being leveled for their timber. Audubon realized the forest must be saved. At the time, Corkscrew was isolated and almost impossible to access. Today it is an oasis in a made-over landscape. In other areas, many of the wild swamps and much of the teeming wildlife that was characteristic of this region less than a generation ago are gone.

Swampland in Florida

Swampland in Florida is a figure of speech referring to real estate scams in which a seller misrepresents unusable swampland as developable property. This technique was used by the Gulf American Land Corp. in the community of Golden Gate Estates, Florida. This photo shows one of the many roads still intact from the priginal project.
