Winston Churchill

When you're 20, you care what everybody thinks.

When you're 40, you stop caring what everybody thinks.

When you're 60, you realize no one was ever thinking about you in the first place.

Be Realistic

This photo is of myself, my wife, and a good friend at Yellowstone that was taken by a stranger who offered to get a photo of the three of us. The young teen girl wasn't about to move and it's what I consider the perfect representation of a kid being somewhere they didn't care to be. While we visited Yellowstone I noticed many grandparents brought their grandkids along with them. The one consistent observation I was able to make was that these kids were bored as can be and pretty much dragged themselves along. They were not enjoying this time with their grandparents, don't expect yours to be any different.

163 Degrees

Nobody will deny that Naples gets hot during the summer but CNN got it wrong this time.

Investment Management

When preparing for retirement, or already retired, it's important to use an excellent investment manager. We've gone through a few since we retired and cashed out of the employer plan. Below you can see a scan of our quarterly statement from a company we are no longer using. We switched investment managers in July 2008 and this statement was delivered in July 2021. For thirteen years we've been receiving a statement showing the same twenty-six-cents value. Fifty-two statements costing fifty-six cents to mail alone is silly, doing it for 13 years is absurd. Obviously, this company doesn't run any kind of check for insufficiently funded accounts. This small expense isn't significant, the lack of processes is, in my opinion. I believe any good investment manager should be aware of the money they handle down to the penny.

When the stock market crashed on Sept. 29, 2008, most investors lost somewhere around 40% of their assets. This wasn't the case with us since this investment management company was taking an extremely long time moving our investments to cash before transferring it to the new company. As a result, our investments were all in a cash fund when the market crashed.

Online Investment Advice

There's an abundance of online investment advice and while some may be good, some are far from good as this photo shows quite clearly. I don't recall what site I found this at but I think we'd all agree that the American Bankers Association didn't provide it. It would be nice if this advice was good and that we could apportion each dollar as the poster showed but I have yet to find a way to divide a dollar into four 30% allocations.

Getting Older

Retiring to Florida

The common view of Florida is that it's a retirement state which is quite accurate and obvious when visiting many parts of the state. My wife and I are among the those that retired to South Florida.

"In Season" is when the snowbirds, holiday vacationers and students on Spring Break all head to Florida. The population bulge lasts from mid December to mid April as people seek to get away from the cold and seek the warmth found throughout most of the state. This period is well-known for a lot of people on the roads, restaurants and beaches. Residents typically complain about this surge of people and long for April when things quiet down and the tourists head back north.

As a fairly new transplant I don't mind the additional people visiting and welcome them to enjoy themselves and spend money supporting the tourist industry that's so critical to the economy. The tourist industry is why Florida is a tax-friendly state for retirees, with no state income tax, no state taxes on Social Security benefits, pensions, IRAs, 401(k)s and other retirement income along with no inheritance tax or estate tax is a major appeal.

It's widely said that Florida is full of old people which is true for vast parts of the state which was very apparent to my wife after moving here when we were sitting at a red light. I noticed she was scanning the surrounding cars as she turned to me and said; "they're all old!" I think that, with a chuckle, I suggested she look in a mirror.
